About my treatment
I had my braces fitted on the 25th of July 2013 and am meant to have them on for 2 years.
Before I had them fitted, I had 2 upper teeth removed to make room due to the "overcrowding in my mouth".
I am also due to have 2 lower wisdom teeth taken out in a few weeks, allowing easier access for the upcoming jaw surgery.
After having my braces for a year, I will be having a orthognathic double jaw surgery- this is being done because my lower jaw is predominantly further forwards than my upper jaw- this means that it appears that my bottom teeth are further forwards then my front, giving me a strange bite. The surgery I am having will move my upper jaw forwards by inserting a metal plate and move my lower jaw backwards by removing some of the jaw. There is a long- term recovery period for this as your face becomes very swollen and numb.
After my surgery I will have to wear my braces for another 6-12 months to make sure that my teeth are in the perfect position to suit my new jaw- after this I will be all done although I will be at least 18 by the time my treatment has ended!
History of my braces
I had removable braces when I was 11 on my upper teeth to attempt to widen the uper jaw. I wore these for a year but they didn't work due to my upper jaw being so "strong". They decided to postpone my treatment until I had stopped growing as there would be more chance of it being successful.
After being referred back at the age of 15, I was sent from the normal orthdontists to the specialists at the local hospital as my case was seen as "extreme" and for me to have surgery I was told I would have to be treated there.
