8. 2 and a 1/2 months on
17/09/2013 17:24Still going on with the braces; am really impressed with how straight my teeth are becoming but I've been ill recently and due to that I have ulcers all over my mouth which is really sore! Stocking up on bonjela and brace wax and hoping that they get me through!
7. Plodding on
05/09/2013 19:02The braces have been on for over 2 and a half months now and I am doing okay! Lots of people have been commenting on how straight my teeth are becoming which is making me happy and I have really noticed the difference! My bottom teeth are still quite wonky but I have been told that it'll take longer for them to straighten out because they are more clustered. My mouth started cutting again after the braces were adjusted due to the wire being sharp but this seems to have subsided now although I am getting my mouth caught on it every now and again but have been using bonjela to stop the pain!
6. Brace alteration appointment
20/08/2013 10:38I have just come back from my appointment at the orthodontists today! I have had my braces "tightened"- this involved removing the coloured elastic bands around each tooth, then the wire being pulled out; it sounds a lot more painful than it is, it didn't hurt at all. They then preceeded to add a slightly thicker wire to my upper teeth and keep the same wire in my lower teeth as it still have "more work to do". Once the new wires had been trimmed down to the right size for my mouth, they were then fitted in and the new elastic bands were attached over the top. The whole procedure only took about 10 minutes so was quick and painless. These are the adjustments that are made at every alteration appointment which are usually every 6-8 weeks.
5. Getting used to it!
15/08/2013 20:02I have had my braces on for just over 6 weeks now and I am completely used to it. They aren't hurting at all now and my mouth is feeling absolutely fine! The wire clicked out of the back bracket again today which is what reminded me to come on here! I managed to shove it back in again but it is getting harder. The longer you have the wire in, the more of it comes out of the back of the bracket as a result of less wire being needed as your teeth straighten. As a aresult, it was harder for me to bend the wire back in again because it was a lot longer than it was previously; it took a lot of time prodding with tweezers but I managed it in the end!
I can't believe how much my teeth have changed over this short period of time! It may not be notiable to anyone else but I guess as it's your own teeth it is. I am really starting to notice the movement of my K9 teeth as they are being dragged downwards and am even starting to develop a small gap in my front teeth from where my teeth are spreading out- I am hoping that this wil be rectifyed soon but I'm sure I won't be left with it!
I have also noticed that the 2 gaps where my upper back teeth were taken out are much smaller than they were;. this is due to my other teeth on the top row being dragged backwards, filling the gap and making them look more straight!
It's really exciting to see the changes and I have another appointment on Tuesday to get them tightened so they will straighten even more after this!
4. Broken brace alert!
21/07/2013 19:19I am in Crete at the moment and my braces broke which wasn't good! The wire threaded through the back bracket clicked out and was left hanging in my mouth- when I touched it it bent into my gum which was pretty sore- all of this from eating a piece of pineapple!
I was panicking because I didn't know where I would be able to go to get it fixed as I knew I wasn't going home for a few days but luckily I managed to bend the wire, as it is so thin, and slot it back into the hole in the bracket so there is no problem!
I recommend doing this rather than going to the orthodontists for them to do it as it is much easier although it is difficult to do to yourself so I would recommend asking someone to do it for you using tweezers.
3. A week later
02/07/2013 19:14I have had my braces for a week now and have got used to them- I am still having to use wax occasionally but they aren't half as bad as they were! I had to go back for another appointment today to get metal rings fitted to the back of my teeth- they were chosen so they were a similar size to my teeth and then stuck down. I'm not really sure what these are for at the moment but I will tell you when I do!
My mouth is being cut again a bit after getting the rings fitted but I am still using the wax which is helping it a lot- I am getting used to them now!
2. The day after
26/06/2013 18:46It's the day AFTER I have had my braces fitted and my mouth is so sore! It's all cut inside from where the wire and the brackets are rubbing against my teeth! I have been using lots of the braces wax on the parts of my mouth that are sore- it's mainly the back areas because there are hooks on the back brackets where leastic bands will be added later.
I have been eating and drinking lots of cold things e.g. ice cream and cold water because this makes the braces expand ever so slightly and relieves the pain. Drinking hot things e.g. coffee (my addicition) makes it worse as it causes the wire to contract so your teeth ache more.
1. First blog
25/06/2013 19:25I had my braces fitted today- I found the experience really strange. Firstly they prepared my teeth by cleaning them off and drying them to make sure the surface was easy to stick things to. They then stuck on the metal brackets onto each tooth- I found it painful to have my mouth held open for that long but the actually sticking on didn't hurt at all! This took around 40 minutes.
I also had elastic bands fitted in between the gaps between all of my 2 back teeth on the left and right, upper and lower. This was to create a gap for metal rings to be fitted onto my back teeth for next week.
After this they then have to thread the metal wire through each of the metal brace brackets- this didn't hurt either. The wire is very thin and flexible at the start of the treatment so you have to be especially careful with what you are eating.
They than added an elastic band to each of the brackets to hold the wire in place- this is what gives the braces their colour.
Immediately after them being fitted my mouth felt like I was pouting because of the brackets pushing your lips forward. It didn't ache immediately but after a few hours my mouth became quite sore as you got used to them being in there- I would recommend Ibruprofen over paracetomol for this type of pain!
